Carrie Finnegan, a 2002 graduate from James Madison University, earned a Bachelor of Music Education with a concentration on violin. While at JMU, she studied conducting with Dr. Robert McCashin and violin with Dr. Wanchi Huang and served as vice president of the JMU ASTA chapter.
Originally from Woodbridge, Virginia, Mrs. Finnegan began playing violin in her middle school orchestra which instilled her passion for strings. She was a member and vice president of the award-winning orchestra and string quartet at Woodbridge High School and the Youth Orchestras of Prince William.
Upon graduation, Mrs. Finnegan began her teaching career with the orchestras at Jack Jouett and Sutherland Middle Schools. Through her fifteen year tenure, the program has grown from 36 to nearly 300 students and now also includes an award-winning orchestra program at Albemarle High School. Under her direction, the orchestras of Albemarle High, Jack Jouett and Sutherland Middle Schools have consistently received superior ratings in District Assessments, first place awards in 13 national competitions, and Albemarle High School has been awarded the Blue Ribbon Award from the Virginia Music Educator's Association for ten years. In addition, the Albemarle High String Ensemble received an invitation to perform at the 2011 Virginia Music Educator’s Conference in Norfolk.
Mrs. Finnegan currently serves on the VBODA Executive Board as the Orchestra Representative and the Lead Teacher for Strings in Albemarle County and has previously served on the board of the Youth Orchestras of Central Virginia. She has performed in the Lynchburg and Roanoke Symphony Orchestras, the Four County Players Theater and the UVA Heritage Theater and she enjoys guest conducting for Regional and All-County Orchestras in Virginia. Mrs. Finnegan resides in Charlottesville with her husband, Kerry, and two young boys, Brady and Quinn.
